VELLORE: Four persons - Vanavarayan, Vijay, Rasu and Mani - were arrested by the Tirupattur town police in connection with an assault on a group of persons on Wednesday. According to the police, a motorcycle on which Bhaskar, a shop owner on Kuppaiyer Street, was proceeding from Jewellery Bazaar to Jinnah Road and a motorcycle on which Vanavarayan was travelling collided on Sunday. Both fell off their bikes and sustained injuries. This led to a wordy duel between them. However, the issue was settled through intervention of a person, who reportedly promised to get compensation to Vanavarayan from Bhaskar. However, Vanavarayan could not meet Bhaskar on Monday. Vanavarayan and six others came on three motorcycles, armed with sticks and knives to Jewellery Bazaar on Wednesday evening and asked for the persons who promised to get compensation from Bhaskar. When they did not get an answer, they reportedly attacked and ransacked some jewellery shops and assaulted three persons - Shanmugam, his brother Gopi and Khaleemullah. The injured were admitted to the Government Hospital, Tirupattur. Protesting this incident, the public blocked traffic and demanded the arrest of those who involved in the attack. The police dispersed the crowd. The jewellery shop owners in the bazaar area downed shutters on Thursday protesting against Wednesday's incident, and demanding action against those involved in the attack.
