KANNUR: The agitation by local people against a toddy shop at South Bazar here continued on the 24th day on Thursday. The residents, supported by prohibitionists, had been agitating since March 23 following the shifting of the toddy shop from an old rented building to a nearby building located in a residential area. Various organisations including the Kerala Madya Nirodhana Samithi expressed solidarity with the ongoing agitation. A ‘model hartal' would be observed in the South Bazar area on April 21 by the Manushyavakasha Samrakshana Samithi as a show of solidarity with the agitating local residents. Samithi convener Pallipram Prasannan said that it would be a different hartal as shops and houses in the area would display black flags and placards in protest. Tappers' protest The demand that the toddy shop be closed met with strong protests from tappers unions which said that the agitation was affecting the livelihood of 30 workers in the shop.
