Madurai
all set for great events:Construction of integrated passenger terminal building at Madurai airport is in progress. MADURAI: The Airports Advisory Committee has resolved to take simultaneous steps for making Madurai airport an international terminal by June when the construction work of the new terminal building is expected to be over. The panel, under the chairmanship of Virudhunagar MP Manick Tagore, met at the airport on Monday. Mr. Tagore said that customs facilities were important for an international terminal. “Minister of State for Finance S.S. Palanimanickam has promised to provide the facilities. All that he has sought is the required infrastructure for customs at the airport,” he said. Stating that the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) had made a projection of increased patronage of the Madurai airport by both domestic and international passengers, he said that the CII and the Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry have been given the responsibility to talk with private airlines to start their international operations from Madurai airport. Two international flight operators were already showing interest in operating from Madurai airport, Mr. Tagore said. The MP said that the strength of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) should be increased from the present 105 to 250 personnel. “The next three months will be crucial for making this an international airport,” he said. The CII chairman, Madurai Zone, Aravind Srinivasan, senior president of Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, S. Rethinavelu, Airport Director, P.S.R.K. Sudhakar, were among those who participated in the meeting.
