Left Front to announce candidates for Kolkata civic polls tomorrow

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The Left Front will announce its candidates for May 30 elections to the 141-ward Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on Saturday.

Biman Bose, Chairman of the Left Front Committee said on Thursday the district units were asked to finalise the candidates' list for the municipalities that fall within their areas through discussions among leaders of the Left Front constituents by April 18.

Eighty other civic bodies across the State also go to the polls on May 30.

But for one or two districts where the candidate for an odd ward is yet to be decided the “understanding between the Left Front constituents has been good” in the choice of nominees in the civic bodies across the State, he said.

In the rival camp

This is in sharp contrast to the situation in the Opposition camp where the Trinamool Congress-Congress electoral alliance seems to have run into rough weather. Differences over seat sharing between Trinamool Congress and the Congress have become a major stumbling block to arriving at consensus even as leaders of the two parties are working to sort out matters. The KMC is presently under the control of the Left Front.

Questions have arisen whether or not Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya will be contesting this time around. He has reportedly informed the Communist Party of India (Marxist) State leadership of his unwillingness to contest even though he has made clear his intention to be part of the electoral campaign.

A larger number of women candidates and several new faces are expected to figure in Left Front list for both the KMC polls and other civic bodies.
