Mysore, Tumkur pilot districts for issuing unique identification numbers in State

Shankar Bennur

Biometrics will be collected prior to issuing the identification number

Tests and analysis of data to be completed before August

MYSORE: Residents of Mysore and Tumkur districts will be the first in Karnataka to get the unique identification numbers (UIDs) to be issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).

The two districts were chosen as pilot districts in the State for the implementation of the project.

A person who is a temporary or an ordinary resident of the country is eligible to get this privilege.

K.K. Sharma, Assistant Director-General, UIDAI, Regional Office, Bangalore, said the process of issuing unique identification numbers to eligible residents of the twodistricts would begin in August.

Speaking to The Hindu, he said the biometrics of each individual is established for issuing the unique ID number. The identity of an individual is established with this number.

Mr. Sharma, who is the State Nodal Officer for UIDAI, said the Proof of Concept (PoC) tests would be taken up in the two districts to examine the technology developed for issuing UIDs based on the biometric data.

“The tests and analysis of the data will get over before August and we shall be in a position to go on to the next step — issuance of UIDs to the residents,” he said.

“Once the data is collected, it may take some time for the residents to get the numbers. I cannot say how long it will take to issue the numbers. The authority has expressed its commitment to issue 100 million unique ID numbers by March 2011,” Mr. Sharma said.

Other States

Andhra Pradesh and Bihar are the two other States where pilot districts will get the unique ID numbers.

Mr. Sharma said the outcome of the PoC tests would be very important for the authority as it would give an overview of the kind of data that they need to process for issuing the UIDs.
