CHENNAI: Brand names appearing on name boards of commercial establishments will also need to be written in Tamil, according to Mayor M. Subramanian. Addressing representatives of traders' associations, he said if the nameboards did not give prominence to Tamil lettering, they would be removed from June 1 by the Chennai Corporation under Section 15 of the Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishments Rules, 1948. Distributing a booklet prepared by the Tamil Development Department, he said that the civic body would come out with a new book listing the Tamil equivalents of about 150 English words commonly found on name boards. Words like mobile phone, internet, website, browsing and laptop would figure in the list. Congress leader Kumari Anandan said traders must ensure that correct spellings are used in the name boards. T.Anandan of Tea Shop Owners Association urged the civic body to issue trade licences in Tamil. Councillor Mangalraj, also a trader, said that traders of Mylapore Kutcheri Road would change their name boards by April 20. Mylai C. Periyasami of the Tamil Nadu Government Traders Welfare Board, A.M. Vikramaraja, president, Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peravai (South Chennai) and V.P.Mani of Thamizhaga Vanigargal Munnetra Sangam welcomed the move of the civic body. Deputy Commissioner (Health) P.Jyothi Nirmala said that traders must ensure that correct door numbers and pin codes are given on the boards.
