Virtual classroom project trial run in June

Shyam Ranganathan

CHENNAI: The University of Madras will have a trial run of the virtual classroom project in June with six colleges, according to G. Thiruvasagam, Vice-Chancellor. The colleges, including the Chepauk campus of the university, the Bharathi College for Women and D.G.Vaishnav College, will receive broadcasts of lectures prepared at the Madras University as part of the project.

“We are constituting a six-member expert committee to advise us on course content and other details. We will be preparing the syllabus based on these inputs,” Dr. Thiruvasagam said.

There would also be lectures of general interest and the lectures given by eminent persons at the university would be recorded and telecast for the benefit of students, he added.

The university had already utilised Rs. 6 crore of the Rs. 13.8 crore allotted to it by the Ministry of Human Resource Development to set up telecasting facilities.

Towers had also been set up in the colleges participating in the project, he said. After the successful completion of Phase-I, it would be extended to six other colleges, he said.

He said the Pan African Network project to connect African universities with Madras University was progressing well. Four courses, including M.Sc. in Information Technology and BBA, will be administered to 240 students in different universities through online in the coming year.
