State set to displace Karnataka in maize production

Special Correspondent

Farmers adopt hybrid seeds of MNC and Indian companies

GUNTUR: Andhra Pradesh, which occupies second place in maize production with 16 per cent of national share, behind Karnataka at 18 per cent is poised to hit the first spot in the current season.

One of the major factors in higher production is sharp rise in per acre yield with farmers adopting hybrid seeds produced by various MNC and Indian companies.

One such company selling its seeds is Syngenta, which has bred a hybrid; NK6607, that not only gives high yield but also has better disease tolerance.

'The company representatives arranged a field day on Friday at Mamillapalli village in Ponnur mandal of Guntur district.

In Guntur and West Godavari districts, NK6607 had been grown by a good number of farmers in winter 2009 season and now the harvesting was in progress.

One of the farmers in the village Pallekonda Kantha Rao has got up to 80 quintals yield in 2 acres of land. The total area sown has comedown in Guntur district this season, but good variety of seeds and clubbed with stable price in market could lead to increase in sowing area in future, they said.
