COIMBATORE: Information Technology (IT) still remains the most favourite course for educational consultant Jayaprakash Gandhi who was addressing a session at the third edition of The Hindu Education Plus Education Fair at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University here on Saturday. When he said the same at the second edition of the fair in 2009, students and parents were not able to believe it because of the prevailing recession. But he assured them that the market would revive in March 2010 and urged them to go in for IT. Recalling that, he said that the IT sector had recovered and the workforce requirement was being seen in terms of a hike of 42 per cent. Prioritising the engineering courses, he said the top of the lot would be Computer Science and Information Technology (CS and IT), followed by Electrical and Electronics (EEE), Civil, Mechanical, and Electronics and Communication (ECE). He urged those who were going in for CS and IT to specialise in data storage, cyber security, network security, and artificial intelligence. EEE aspirants were asked to concentrate on courses relating to power / energy. The areas to look for in civil engineering were ocean engineering, and earthquake engineering. Even though he told students to keep mechanical engineering as a last option, those still keen on the discipline were urged to consider piping engineering, welding engineering, product design, thermal engineering, and lean manufacturing. Mentioning that opportunities were not too bright for those opting for bio-technology and aeronautics, he said the most popular emerging engineering fields were agriculture irrigation, geo-informatics, electro-chemicals, petroleum, environmental, marine and nautical sciences. Chief Executive Officer of Park Group of Institutions Anusha R. Mahesh, and Advisor of SVS Educational Institutions Nanjan Balu, spoke to the students on choosing the right course and excelling in it. Ms. Anusha also announced a fee waiver for those excelling in academics and sports. “District toppers getting admitted will receive a 100 per cent fee waiver; while school toppers will get 25 per cent fee waiver. Those who register at the fair and get admission in the Park institutions will get a fee waiver of 25 per cent if they had scored 200 in any one subject in Plus-Two.” Dr. Balu spoke on the importance of the three P's – Passion, Patience, and Perseverance.
