Gagan Narang bags bronze

NEW DELHI: Gagan Narang won the bronze medal in air rifle in the shooting World Cup in Beijing on Sunday.

The Hyderabad lad, who had shot a double world record in the World Cup Finals in 2008 in Bangkok, came up with a total of 700.3 to pip Peter Sidi of Hungary by 0.1 point for the medal.

Narang shot a qualification score of 597 following a sequence of 100,100, 100, 99, 99, 99. It was the second best score, a point behind the Olympic silver medallist, Zhu Qinan.

In the final, Narang shot 103.3 which was 0.1 point better than the Chinese. However, Denis Sokolov of Russia bagged the gold despite a 597 in the qualification, as he shot the best in the final, for a 104.3. He pipped the Chinese by 0.1 point for the gold.

Incidentally, it was his second bronze in a World Cup in Beijing for Narang, who replicated the score precisely 597 and 103.3, that he had accomplished in 2008.

He also has two gold medals in World Cup, including one in 3-position event, and another bronze won in Korea last year.

The rest of the Indian shooters, including the two competing in the MQS section, were below par.

In women's skeet, Arti Singh shot a 63 out of 75, following rounds of 22, 20 and 21 to finish 16th in a field of 25. Saniya Sheikh was woefully off colour and finished at the bottom with a total of 45.

The results: Men: 10m air rifle: 1. Denis Sokolov (Rus) 701.3 (597); 2. Zhu Qinan (Chn) 701.2 (598); 3. Gagan Narang 700.3 (597); 24. Sanjeev Rajput 592; 25. P.T. Raghunath 591. MQS: Rakesh Manpat 589; Imran Hasan Khan 587.
