Manufacture, sale and use of plastic carry bags of thickness less than 20 microns is banned GO provides for levying of penalties for violation GUNTUR: Numerous campaigns, Government Orders and appeals from government and non-governmental organisations have not deterred people from manufacturing plastic carry bags of thickness less than 20 microns. To check this menace with an iron hand, every district is supposed to have a task force. But Guntur does not have any functional task force. The Forum For Better Bapatla, which had taken a voluntary step to implement and bring awareness among people in Bapatla in association with the local municipality, has found it disgusting to see nothing happening from the State government side in implementing the rule. Forum convener P.C. Sai Babu, in a release, urged district Collector B. Ramanjaneyulu to constitute a district-level task force committee and strengthen the voluntary efforts in various towns to ban plastic carry bags. The government banned the manufacture, sale and use of plastic carry bags of thickness less than 20 microns under G.O. Ms. No. 25 issued in 2001. It also provided for levying penalties for violation under the Environment Protection Act, 1986. To effectively organise, supervise and monitor the enforcement of these rules, a district-level task force committee had to be constituted with district Collector as its chairman.
