New mortuary at GH

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The new mortuary complex at the District General Hospital would be inaugurated on Thursday. The project has been a long-standing need of the hospital for which the late Nawab Rajendran, journalist and social activist, had donated Rs. 2 lakh that he had received as Manava Sewa Award.

The Manava Sewa Trust that was formed with this amount had collected Rs 7.86 lakh towards the project. Along with the Rs. 21 lakh provided from the MP's fund of former MP Sebastian Paul, the complex has now become a reality with support from the Rotary Club of Cochin mid-town. V.R. Krishna Iyer, former judge of the Supreme Court, will inaugurate the mortuary complex at 11 a.m. on the hospital premises.

Addressing a press meet, District Collector M. Beena said the modern mortuary would have facilities to conduct three post-mortems simultaneously and can store 20 bodies at a time.

There is a special room to store decayed bodies. Journalist K.M. Roy, chairman, Manava Sewa Trust and architect B. R. Ajit, member of the trust, spoke on the occasion.
