Residents say paddy fields have been affected by toxic effluents. KOCHI: Residents of Venmani in Thiruvaniyoor grama panchayat have decided to protest against what they alleged ‘the unscientific land acquisition being initiated by the BPCL Kochi Refinery' in the region. Rejeesh Kumar, president of the action council of residents, said here that nearly 112 acres have been acquired by the company for various development works. He said the people living near the land were suffering owing to the pollution from the company. Shinil Abraham, secretary of the council, said the paddy fields in the area have also been affected following the dumping of toxic effluents into the fields. He said the company had supplied drinking water to the residents after the wells in the region became affected due to pollution. The action council representatives said the unscientific land acquisition had adversely affected the lives of the Venmani residents. The council has also petitioned Revenue Minister K. P. Rajendran; K. P. Dhanapalan, M.P.; and the District Collector against the land acquisition being carried out by the company.
