‘Vehicles held up at the check-post for 10 to 12 hours' Agitation planned against transport of goods in buses KOCHI: The Kerala Goods Transporters' Federation has alleged that the Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac's efforts to make the Walayar check post corruption-free have failed for want of support from other departments. N.A. Mohammed Kutty, president of the federation, said here that vehicles coming from other States to Kerala are held up at the check post for 10 to 12 hours. He said the system of checking goods using sharp iron rods by the excise department officials had caused several problems to the transporters. Mr. Kutty said this type of checking will damage electronic goods and materials like paint, which also lack insurance cover. Officials continue to practise such type of checking despite getting directions from the Minister against it. He said the motor vehicles department and excise department had only one counter each at the check post, leading to long queues at the point. The federation representatives alleged that tonnes of goods have been illegally transported into the State through buses having contract carriage permits. They said the motor vehicles department officials have failed to initiate action against such vehicles. The federation is planning to launch an agitation against the illegal transport of goods in buses using contract carriage permits.
