SHIMOGA: Singer and recipient of the the Shishunala Sharif Award Gartikere Raghanna was felicitated here on Tuesday on turning 75. He was conferred the title ‘Swara Sadhaka'. Speaking at the event, Mr. Raghanna attributed his initiation into music to the support he received from his parents. The bhajana, which used to be held at his house every day, was his inspiration to take to music, write poems and set them to tunes, he said. ‘Not for money' He said, “I never sing for money and consider the support of my well-wishers more important.” He would continue to serve in the field of music if he was assured of the same help and appreciation, he said. Speaking at the function, poet H.S. Venkateshmurthy said that Mr. Raghanna's music had a soothing effect. “It is unfortunate that he did not receive the publicity that he deserved. But that has not disheartened him. He continues to sing unmindful of whether he has benefited by it,” he said. Suryapada Swami of the Art of Living Centre, Bangalore, spoke. Chairman of the Malnad Area Development Board A.S. Padmanabh Bhat, who presided over the function, presented a purse of Rs. 1,00,101 to Mr. Raghanna. Kammaje Yajnanarayana Herle of the Gurunarasimha Swamy temple of Saligram, humour writer Y.V. Gundurao and music director Praveen D. Rao were present.
