Kochi
KOCHI: The construction of a public toilet on MG Road began on Friday. The Kochi Corporation has been toying with the idea of setting up a few public toilets in the city for quite some time. The initial proposal was to set up at least 15 toilets in the central city area. However, the shortage of funds prevented the civic body from setting up the facility on its own. Later, it decided to implement the project on the build-operate-transfer (BOT) mode. The agency setting up the toilet will be allowed the right to display advertisement panels on the building. The toilet will be built according to the design prepared by the Better Cochin Response Group, civic authorities said. Two agencies have come forward for setting up the facility in the West Kochi and central city areas. While one agency demanded 15 years of displaying rights the other demanded 30 years. At the same time, the maximum period that the civic body can allow for such agencies is just three years. The corporation has taken up the issue with the government.
