KOCHI: Information and communication technology will be relied up on in a big way for the deployment of officials for duty during the forthcoming elections to the local bodies.
The number of officials to be deployed for the panchayat elections will be far in excess of the officials deployed for the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
If four officials were deployed in each booth for the public elections, an additional 50 per cent officials would have to be deployed for the local body elections.
Though only one ballot would be required in the urban regions, at least three ballots for district, block, and grama panchayat levels would be required in the rural areas, which make up 80 per cent of the region where elections are held.
Considering the enormous task ahead, the State Election Commission has decided to utilise e-drop (Electronically Deploying Randomly Officers for Polling) developed by the National Informatics Centre for the efficient and speedy deployment of officials.
Besides, the service of the National Informatics Centre would also be sought for the speedy declaration of results.
At the district level, the Additional District Magistrate and District Informatics Officer have been appointed as nodal officers for coordinating these activities.
The State Election Commission will convene a meeting of these officials in Thiruvananthapuram to discuss the arrangements to be made in connection with the elections to the local self-government bodies.
