CHICKBALLAPUR: Braving the scorching sun, hundreds of people took to the streets here on Wednesday and blocked the National Highway 7 passing through Chickballapur, seeking immediate implementation of the G.S. Paramasivaiah Committee report on providing drinking water and irrigation facilities to the arid central Karnataka districts by diverting excess monsoon water from the west-flowing Netravati. About 3,000 people, under the aegis of Shaswatha Neeravari Horata Samiti, came in a procession and blocked the National Highway-7. Following the demonstration, vehicular movement was affected on the highway for about an hour. The demonstration was organised by the Shaswatha Neeravari Horata Samiti, which has representatives from the Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress, Janata Dal (Secular), Communist Party of India (Marxist) and various farmers, Dalit and Kannada organisations. To express solidarity with the protesters, lawyers stayed away from courts and took part in the procession, which culminated in a public meeting.
