Fuel testing lab at PEC

PUDUCHERRY: A lab to test the quality of petrol and diesel has been established at Pondicherry Engineering College. Set up at a cost of Rs. 72 lakh, it will start functioning after getting approval of the Union Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Social Welfare Minister M. Kandasamy told the Assembly on Thursday.

Replying to a debate on the demand for grants to Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department, he said that as part of government's intervention in the market to control prices of essential commodities, four more cost price shops would be opened by the Pondicherry Argo Products, Food and Civil Supplies Corporation Limited.

A godown with a capacity to store 500 tonnes of essential commodities such as rice, wheat and sugar would be constructed at a cost of Rs. 1 crore.

The Public Distribution Outlets would supply single boiled rice starting from July instead of providing double boiled rice.

The Civil Supplies Department had started the verification process to distribute bio-metric based smart ration cards. Tender would be floated shortly to select the vendor for capturing bio-metric information of the consumers.

The department also decided to provide rental subsidy for licence holders of fair price shops, Mr. Kandasamy said.
