Early rains predicted

KOCHI: The monsoons would arrive 7-10 days in advance in Kerala, the former Director, India Meteorological Department, Mr. P.V. Joseph said. There would be a near normal monsoon in the State this time, he said, while delivering the keynote address at a function organised here on Thursday to hand over the P.S. Gopinathan Nair Environment Award to S.P. Ravi, who has been spearheading the movement against the Athirapilly Hydel Project.

Rainfall has decreased by 17 per cent in southern Kerala during the past 100 years, he said. Mr Joseph spoke on how tough it is to predict the monsoon. “The year 2009 was the warmest in India. Carbon dioxide alone causes 70 per cent of global warming, the rest coming mainly from methane and nitrous oxide.”

V.R. Krishna Iyer, former Judge, Supreme Court, said India is beseeching the U.S. for nuclear power, at a time when renewable-energy sources like solar power remain under-utilised.
