GHMC certification to ensure hygienic street food sought

In ‘Environment and Greening' session, concerns of ever-expanding city were discussed

A presentation by the team from GE suggests a strategy towards conservation of electric energy


HYDERABAD: A Hyderabad Street Foods Monitoring and Review Committee should be setup with participation of stakeholders to streamline the functioning of street food vendors across the city and ensure hygiene, suggested the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) here on Sunday.

A presentation made by a NIN team during the City Strategy Awards organised by Foundation for Futuristic Cities here come out with a plan for demarcation of vending zones and creating food bazaars with appropriate categorisations.

Spaces around facilities such as MMTS stations can get attached with small-scale food bazaars, said G.M. Subba Rao of NIN. GHMC certification can be given to ensure hygienic street foods by vendors. Other presentations made during the concluding session included ‘Civic sense for a sensitive and sensible city', ‘How to make Hyderabad a haven for expatriates' and ‘Branding Hyderabad as a futuristic city'. Teams were from GE, Indus International School, ICFAI Business School, Infosys and Team Ventures.

In the ‘Environment and Greening' session, concerns of ever-expanding Hyderabad city were discussed. Meera Soni, a student from University of New South Wales, came up with a fresh approach of looking at population as an opportunity towards better town-planning. Her strategy for a ‘Carbon-neutral city' included densification of commercial and residential spaces, inter-complementary high and low energy consumption patches, and decentralisation of power resources.

‘Energy Conservation Crusade in Hyderabad', a presentation by the team from GE, suggested a comprehensive strategy towards conservation of electric energy, which includes conservation at home, green building solutions.

A team from National Remote Sensing Agency proposed Tree Census and development of Sacred Groves as solutions to loss of greenery in the city. Energy-saving coupons, bioremediation of waste and green credit policy were suggested by a team from Amjad Ali Khan College of Business Administration.

Civil Supplies Commissioner Sanjay Jaju, Director General of State Forest Academy C.S.Ramalakshmi, former Associate Dean of Home Science College Vijaya Nambiyar, MD of Microsoft India Srini Koppula, and The Hindu Chief of Bureau S. Nagesh Kumar were part of the jury.
