HMDA to form local committees for the purpose

21 water bodies listed for immediate intervention


HYDERABAD: Following the suggestions offered by different stakeholders at the ‘Citizens for City' forum on Sunday, HMDA, on Monday, announced that it would involve local neighbourhood committees in the protection of lakes and water bodies in different areas of the city.

The Lake Protection Committee chaired by HMDA Commissioner has identified 21 water bodies for immediate intervention, as part of a special drive from April 22 to June 5 (World Environment Day), a press release said.

Osmansagar, Hussainsagar and Himayathsagar were accorded top priority in the list released by the authority.

Durgam Cheruvu, Banda Cheruvu (Malkajgiri), Thammadi Kunta (Madhapur), Amber lake, Hasmathpet lake (both in Kukatpally), Yellamma Cheruvum, Bhagarathi Cheruvu, Mysamma Cheruvu (all three in Serilingampally), Pedda Cheruvu (Ramnthapur) and Kapra lake were identified for demarcation of boundary and removal of encroachments under second priority.

Diverting sewerage

The need to divert excess sewerage inflow and construct sewerage treatment plants was identified at Banjara lake, RK Puram lake (Malkajgiri), Patel Cheruvu and Pedda Cheruvu (Nacharam), Nalla Cheruvu (Uppal), Mir Alam tank, Satam Cheruvu and Nalla Cheruvu in Moosapet.

Local bodies invited

As part of this drive it has invited local residents associations, neighbourhood committees, NGOs operating in the vicinity of 21 water bodies to enrol and coordinate with HMDA and Revenue authorities in protecting the water bodies in their respective areas.
