Belgaum: Farmers from Shegunshi and nearby villages in Athani taluk have opposed the State Government's move to acquire their land for relocation of people affected by the floods. The farmers led by Sidram Satyappa Umrani of Shegunshi on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the Special Deputy Commissioner, Land Acquisition and Rehabilitation/Resettlement, opposing the move to acquire their land. Loans Mr. Umrani said the farmers had taken loans for farming and other activities. If their land was acquired, they would not be in a position to repay the loans Government land in nearby villages could be acquired to relocate the families affected by the floods. It was meaningless to render some families homeless to relocate others, he said.
