Youth killed in attack by group

Staff Reporter

BERHAMPUR: A youth was hacked to death by a group of miscreants near the crowded Budhi Thakurani temple in the city on Tuesday night.

The incident occurred at around 9.30 pm. The victim was identified as Badrinarayan Bhuyan (25) of Jagabandhu street.

According to the police, Badri was residing in Mumbai and came here for a few weeks. He was walking from the Utkal Cinema square to his home, when the miscreants rounded him up. The miscreants were armed with sharp weapons like knives and swords. As per eyewitnesses the assailants were five or six in number and they were youths in their twenties.

Although the area near the temple was too crowded, the group started attacking their victim. The passersby started to run as the miscreants also threatened them. After making lethal blows on Badinarayan's body, the assailants fled the spot. Receiving information about the incident, personnel of the Bada Bazar police station reached the spot and took the victim to the MKCG Medical College Hospital. But he died on way.

Although the police are yet to arrest anyone in connection with the case and has not ascertained the reason behind the murder, it was suspected that past rivalry had led to the murder. It was alleged that the victim was one of the accused in a murder attempt in October last. After that he had left for Mumbai. He recently returned from Mumbai and also made arrangements to leave for Mumbai after a few days.

Woman's charge

Even the small grant of Rs. 1,400 for mothers under Janani Surakshya Yojna is allegedly misappropriated by the health officials. This came to the fore when a destitute from K. Barida village of Beguniapada block in Ganjam district, Tanu Sahu, dared to stand up against the erring health officials who allegedly misappropriated Rs. 1,400 which she would have got after her child birth in the MKCG Medical College Hospital in the city.

She has also sent a memorandum to the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) of Ganjam district on the issue. The CDMO, Ratnakar Behera, has ordered the allegation be enquired by an Additional District Medical Officer (ADMO). The CDMO also ordered that the cost of medicines used by the poor woman during her child birth would be borne from the funds of the ‘Rogi Kalyan Samity'.

According to Tanu, the Asha volunteer of her village had taken her to Kodala hospital for child birth. But as she was going through severe penury, she did not have the capacity to be treated there. The villagers helped her from village funds and she was admitted to the MKCG Medical College Hospital in the city. As per the norms she was to get Rs. 1,400 under Janani Surakshya Yojna after the child birth. But she has not got the amount.
