CUTTACK: The 162nd birth anniversary of Utkal Gaurav Madhusudan Das, the architect of modern Orissa, was observed across the State on Wednesday with main functions held at his workplace here and 25 km away at his birthplace in Satyabhamapur near Salepur. Observed as ‘Swabhiman Diwas', the day was particularly marked by meetings in which Madhu Babu's contributions in establishing Utkal Samilani, his strenuous efforts in forming separate Orissa State on the basis of language, his strong views on industrialisation and his illustrious career as a lawyer were highlighted. Meetings were held at his workplace at Madhusmruti at Mission Road where he stayed from 1889 to till his death in February 1934 and at his Samadhi at Gorakabar by the district administration and many social and cultural organisations. Similarly, functions were also held at his birthplace at Satyabhamapur by the district administration. In Bhubaneswar, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik along with many of his Cabinet colleagues garlanded the statue of Madhu Babu inside the premises of State Assembly. Similarly, State Chief Justice V. Gopalgowda and two of his brother judges of the High Court also attended a function organised on the occasion by the Bhubaneswar Bar Association.
