Heavy traffic clogs e-filing site: merchants

Kozhikode: The All-Kerala Distributors Association has demanded an extension of the last date for e-filing of annual returns and renewal of VAT registration from April 30 to May 31 since accessing the web site of the Commercial Taxes Department has become difficult in the past few days.

The secretariat of the association, which met here on Thursday, made an appeal to the State government on this count. M.K. Shyamaprasad, president of the association, presided over the meeting.

Since the middle of the financial year 2009-10, all financial dealings of the department are done online. In a statement here, Babu Kunnoth, treasurer of the association, said the nearly two-lakh registered merchants had been struggling to access the site for the past three days. A good number of them had been unsuccessful in gaining access. He said that since May 1 and 2 were bank holidays, making payments would be impossible even if the site became accessible.
