Protest against transfer of doctor from Kumta

Correspondent

Karwar: Kumta town witnessed a protest on Saturday against the transfer of a doctor to the district hospital at Karwar from Kumta.

The protesters, led by Kumta MLA Dinakar Shetty, alleged that the doctor, Srinivas Nayak, was an “upright” doctor who was the victim of a political battle between the two Ministers from Uttara Kannada district (district in-charge Minister Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri and Fisheries Minister Anand Asnotikar). Mr. Shetty condemned Mr. Asnotikar who reportedly gave an ultimatum to the District Health Officer to relieve Dr. Nayak from his duties. They asked for the transfer to be cancelled and warned that they would intensify the agitation if their demands were not met. Dr. Nayak was transferred to Karwar after allegations that the dialysis machines there had been rendered “useless”.
