VIJAYAWADA: TDP MLA and party district convener Devineni Umamaheswara Rao on Saturday charged the United Progressive Alliance Government with total failure in view of the fact that many scandals had come to the surface in key sectors raising fears about their ill-effects on the overall economy of the country. Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Rao deplored that the alleged multi-crore fraud in the 2G Spectrum allocation involving Union Telecommunications Minister A. Raja was yet another example of the UPA's failure to provide clean governance. “We had Shashi Tharoor resigning from his post on charges of corruption. Now it is another scam in the Telecommunications Ministry. Apparently, middlemen and brokers are calling the shots leading to one scandal after another,” the MLA said. Mr. Umamaheswara Rao wanted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi to break their silence on the charges and give an explanation to the nation. The TDP MLA referred to reports saying that no action was initiated so far though a fraud to the tune of Rs. 1 lakh crore was said to have taken place in the allocation of 2G Spectrum. Stating that the telecom scandal would come to its logical end, Mr. Umamaheswara Rao said that the UPA Government was afraid of taking action against the Ministers belonging to its allies only to save its skin and ensure the survival of its Government. He demanded that a Joint Parliamentary Committee be constituted to probe the Spectrum allocation considering the huge money involved in the matter. Mr. Umamaheswara Rao charged Chief Minister K. Rosaiah with failing to check corruption being resorted to by former chief minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's close aide K.V.P. Ramachandra Rao. The MLA lamented that Mr. Ramachandra Rao's role was there in every file involving corrupt deals in the State in the past six years and the Government should order a probe by a sitting High Court judge into the matter. MLA's threat Mr. Rao threatened to launch a dharna in front of the office of the irrigation superintending engineer if the tenders regarding works for nearly 24 water tanks in the district were not cancelled as the allotment was not proper. If poor quality works were carried out in tanks, the farmers would suffer heavily in future, he lamented.
