Reminiscences of a popular film

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: The city witnessed a unique event when those associated with the making of the popular film, “Nayarupidicha Pulivalu,” turned up to celebrate its 50th year.

K. Vishwanath, veteran director (of hit movies like ‘Sankarabharanam'), who worked as sound recordist for the movie, inaugurated the function held at Ernakulam Town hall.

Pointing out that it was a truly memorable occasion, Mr. Vishwanath said that films in the early years were made with passion.

Stating that his visit to Kochi was like a journey back to be among his fraternity, he said that “Nayarupidicha Pulivalu” would remain in the hearts of movie buffs for its excellent story and narration.

Mr. Vishwanath also praised the efforts made by its producer, T. E. Vasudevan, in ensuring the overall success of the endeavour.

An experiment

Explaining that the movie was a courageous experiment, John Paul, noted scenarist, said that Mr. Vasudevan had always tried to come up with different themes in his movies.

Mr. Paul said that “Nayarupidicha Pulivalu” holds the legacy for being one of the first movies that selected circus, as the main setting for the story.

Expressing his gratitude to all those who worked for the movie, Mr. Vasudevan said the movie became a hit as it had a good story line.

He said that 50 per cent of the success of a movie depends on its story.

Made on a shoestring budget of less than Rs. 1 lakh under the banner of Jayamaruthi Pictures, the film had a long successful run of nearly 135 days at the box office.

Veteran actors Sukumari, and G. K. Pillai; senior technicians associated with the making of the film including K. Sukumaran, V. B. C. Menon, and M. G. Benchamin spoke on the occasion. J. J. Kuttikad, president of the Jaycey Foundation, welcomed the gathering.
