Religious fervour:Hordes of Naga sadhus and other devotees proceeding towards Manjeera river for Mahakumbhmela at Raghavapoor in Medak district on Monday. –

RAGHAVAPOOR (Medak dist.): For the first time in recent history of Manjeera river, Mahakumbhmela commenced in Medak district on Monday.

Led by Kasinath Baba, the founder Panchavati Sai Saraswathi Mahakhsetram at this far off village, scores of sadhus from Allahabad and other areas arrived at Manjeera river near Pultkurthi bridge and offered prayers to the river Goddess and presented saree, kumukuma, bangles and other material seeking her blessings.

After taking a holy dip in the river, they offered prayers at the Dhwajasthambham erected on the shore of the river and took a procession to the temple located at about 1.5 k.m..

The sadhus include Digambaras from Naga sect.

Prayers were offered at the temple marking the beginning of Kumbhamela. Homams commenced in the evening while prayers and abhishekams to one lakh Shiva lingams would be performed every day.

On the first day, the number of pilgrims was less and organisers are confident that the pilgrim rush would touch three lakh mark by May 14, the final day. Officials are extending all support to Kumbhamela by laying roads, supplying power and arranging medical services. Meanwhile, the tents erected by organisers collapsed due to heavy gales and rain on Sunday night.

Arrangements are being made to erect the tents again to accommodate the pilgrims.

According to Kashinath Baba, when sun enters Mesha rasi during Adhika Visahka masam, all the river streams enter Majeera, there by making it more sacred.

He says that this was mentioned in Bramhapuranam, where Manjeera was called as Vanjeera, after a scholarly person belonging to Karnataka.
