Agathiar Block is one of the oldest at Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Post Graduate Institute
Facelift: Work on the outer surface of the Block has been completed. PUDUCHERRY: Damaged portions on the outer surface of Agathiar Block of Indira Gandhi Government General Hospital and Post Graduate Institute (IGGGH and PGI) have been renovated. Similar works will be taken up in the inner courtyard of the block and completed in two months. The Agathiar Block, which is about 40 years old and one of the oldest at the hospital, was in a dilapidated state. It consists of ground plus four floors. It houses the outpatient departments on two floors, orthopaedics, ENT, ophthalmology, special wards and urology wards on the remaining floors, Medical Superintendent of IGGGH and PGI V. Govindaraj said. “The concrete top surface of the block – fins, sunshades and columns – had deteriorated out of sea breeze. The surface was coming off at various places. We removed such portions. Chemicals were applied on the surface followed by chemical plastering, which is mixing cement with chemicals. This will help in strengthening the concrete,” Junior Engineer at IGGGH and PGI K. Srinivasan Ram said. Badly damaged rods were re-laid, he said, adding that this was for strengthening the pillars. “We also did an anti-fungal paint coating on the exterior of the block,” Dr. Govindaraj said. Renovation work on the exterior of the block, which began in June 2009, was completed in March. “Around 3,000 square metre of the outer surface was subjected to treatment and renovation. “A sum of around Rs. 40 lakh has been spent on the renovation work,” he said. Following this, renovation would be taken up in the inner courtyard of the block. “The inner courtyard has been facing similar problems of deterioration. Work will be taken up in the second phase at a new estimate. It will be completed in two months. Sunshades here are broken and will be recast,” he said. Similarly, the ramp area would also be renovated. Junior Engineer of IGGGH and PGI A. Pannirselvam said that the renovation of the outer surface would help in preventing rusting out of sea breeze. Dr. Govindaraj said that parts of the outer surface of the block, which were breaking and falling, were fully replaced. Bathrooms and toilets of the block had also been renovated.
