Toddy workers demand opening of shop

Expression of solidarity:Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha workers carrying a thatched structure, symbolic of a toddy shop, as part of their Collectorate march in Kannur on Tuesday.

KANNUR: Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) activists staged a march to the Collectorate in Kannur on Tuesday to express solidarity with the ongoing agitation against a toddy shop at South Bazar here.

They carried a thatched structure, symbolising the toddy shop, as a gesture of solidarity with women at South Bazar protesting against the toddy shop. BJYM district president Biju Elakkuzhi led the march.

There was some tension when workers belonging to toddy tappers' unions tried to remove the symbolic toddy shop placed near the Collectorate. The workers too had been taking out a march demanding steps for opening of the toddy shop. Union leaders pacified the workers.
