BHUBANESWAR: Much to the cheer of the sports fraternity, Orissa's women athletes have brought laurels to the State. National record holder hurdles queen Anuradha Biswal claimed Gold in 100 metres hurdles race for women at the 5 {+t} {+h} National Senior Federation Cup Athletics Championship at Birsa Munda Stadium in Ranchi. She clocked 14.28 seconds to win the top honour. Similarly, in 4x100 meters relay, the Orissa squad comprising Anuradha Biswal, Srabani Nanda, Renubala Mohanta and Saraswati Chand won silver. In discus throw, Parbati Sethi, an employee of the East Coast Railways, bagged silver while sprinter Srabani Nanda won silver in 100 metres race. Jauna Murmu has also bagged silver in the 400 metres race. The seven-member women athletes' squad bagged four medals in the meet. The other major honour has come to Orissa through woman powerlifter Mandakini Mohanta, who has recently joined the Orissa Police. The girl from Mayurbhanj district, often referred as the strong woman of Asia, bagged a bronze medal in the ongoing Asian Power Lifting Championship at the Mangolian capital of Ullanbatar. She bagged a silver medal in the Asian meet in 1999 followed by gold medals in 2005 and 2009 championships.
