MUNICH: Former Australian Open finalist Marcos Baghdatis came back from a set down to book his place in the second round of the BMW Open claycourt tournament here on Tuesday. The 24-year-old, who made the Australian Open final in 2006, made a slow start, committing seven double faults in the first set. However, he rallied to register a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Germany's Peter Gojowczyk. The fifth-seeded Cypriot will now play Switzerland's Marco Chiudinelli in the second round. The Swiss needed just 52 minutes to beat France's Thierry Ascione 6-0, 6-4. At Rome, five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams breezed into the Rome Open third round at the Foro Italico with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Patty Schnyder while World No. 1 Serena Williams, the reigning Australian Open champion, overcame a tough first set to beat Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky 7-6(2), 6-1. Safina stunned Reigning champion Dinara Safina was stunned by Romania's Alexandra Dulgheru 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1. In other matches, Polish eighth seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland thrashed home favourite Roberta Vinci 6-1, 6-0 while there were wins for seventh seed Jelena Jankovic, 14th seed Nadia Petrova and 16th seed Shahar Peer.
