COIMBATORE: District Collector P. Umanath has made a fresh appeal to all shops, hotels and eateries to display their names in Tamil first and then in English and other languages, in view of the World Tamil Conference to be held here from June 23 to 27. In an appeal on Tuesday, the Collector said the department had periodically asked these establishments to follow this system. The Deputy Commissioner of Labour made an announcement on this in December last year, warning of action under The Tamil Nadu Shops and Establishments Act, 1947 and the Tamil Nadu Catering Establishments Act, 1958. An order was issued in January and 15 days' time was given to comply with it. Surprise checks in February and March found that more than 300 shops had not complied with the order. Action was initiated against them. The Collector said the co-operation of all the shops and establishments were vital to ensuring that all the boards in the city had names in Tamil on top and then in English or other languages, if necessary.
