TESTING AN OPTION:Police Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu supervising a one-way arrangement on COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore City Police have begun efforts to decongest Gandhipuram. On Tuesday, the police diverted the flow of traffic on V.K.K. Menon Road, Bharathiar Road and at the R.V. Hotel roundabout. The diversion was for two hours – between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. – to study if diverting the flow would ease congestion in the area. The police, led by Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu, diverted vehicles from Gandhipuram to women's polytechnic college through V.K.K. Menon Road. Those vehicles were made to take the Avarampalayam Road to reach the college. Bharathiar Road was made one-way with vehicles permitted to move only towards the bus stand. Mr. Babu said the move was made following a study the police carried out and also suggestions from the public. Policemen at all the junctions within the study area ensured that road users were diverted as per the plan. The police, however, soon saw traffic pile up at the Bharathiar Road – Nanjappa Road junction. Bus drivers moving in from Sathy Road also struggled to drop commuters at the bus station. They were forced to get into V.K.K. Menon Road and then Bharathiar Road to reach the bus stand to drop passengers. Mr. Babu said all the issues would be studied thoroughly before the police arrived at a decision. The police were likely to make a few more changes at the area. He clarified that the decision was not based on accident statistics as there would hardly be accidents at any congested area.
