Hetul, Aravindh in lead

Chennai: Hetul Shah of Gujarat and Aravindh Chithambaram of Tamil Nadu are in the lead, with eight points, after nine rounds of the RMK Residential School National under-11 chess championship here.

Aravindh played the Sveshnikov variation of the Sicilian defence with black and sacrificed a rook for knight to hunt down the white king of Statemate Sai Viswhesh in 37 moves.

In joint third place on 7.5 points are Arjun Bharat (Kar) and Harsha Bharathakoti (AP).

Arjun advanced his king in a queen ending to win a pawn and forced a pawn ending to defeat Karthik of Andhra in 59 moves. Harsha's lead in development led to Jena losing a rook for bishop and the game.

Priyamvada closing in

Priyamvada closed in on the girls' title by taking a two-point lead with just two rounds to be played. She needs a draw from the last two games for the title.

Four players are tied for the second place with seven points: Shiny Das (Tripur), Ivana Furtado (Goa), C.H. Meghna (Ker) and Vaishali (TN).

Former two-time world girls' under-8 champion Ivana Furtado forked two rooks with her knight to win material against Manjula of Tamil Nadu before posting a win.

Meghna won material at every tactical juncture to hand Sribrinda of Orissa her first defeat of the tournament.
