Taxes: Congress disputes opposition parties' criticism

Staff Reporter

‘They are levelling baseless allegations for their survival'

VIJAYAWADA: The Congress party on Wednesday took exception to criticism of the opposition parties that there was a steep hike in taxes collected by the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC).

Addressing a press conference, Congress floor leader in VMC general body Meesala Rajeswara Rao said that the opposition parties – the CPI, the CPI (M) and the PRP – were levelling baseless allegations for their survival.

The opposition parties were worried about their existence as municipal elections were fast approaching.

‘No truth'

There was no truth in the criticism that the rent of the Tummalapallivari Kshetrayya Kalakshetram was steeply hiked to Rs.12,000.

The rent was applicable only to corporate and business people. It will continue to be low for cultural organisations and political parties, he said.

Mr. Rao said that the ‘aaseellu' were being collected only at four areas during mango season.

But, the opposition parties were making a hue and cry that ‘aaseellu' were being collected from petty traders in the city.
