Special Correspondent
Chennai: The Communist Party of India State secretary, D. Pandian, has asked the government to provide essential equipment to its hospitals and maintain them properly.
In a statement, Mr. Pandian said that a woman receiving treatment in the radiology wing of Institute of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Government Hospital for Women & Children (IOG), Egmore, was critically injured in a fire that broke out at the hospital.
Fire accident
According to reports, the fire first broke out from the air conditioning system and damaged costly equipment, he said asking the health department to order an inquiry as the accident could have been the result of improper maintenance and negligence on the part of authorities.
Cause for concern
As the poor solely depended on government hospitals for treatment, such accidents were a cause of concern.
Compensation sought
Therefore, the government should improve infrastructure, maintain facilities and provide compensation to the injured woman, Mr Pandian asked.
