Form a team of experts to fix price, say farmers Government had announced support price of Rs. 1,030 a quintal DAVANGERE: Over 37 farmers were arrested on Friday after they resorted to “rasta roko” agitation near Shiramagondanahalli demanding that the Government fix scientifically-calculated Minimum Support Price for paddy, taking into consideration factors such as cultivation cost and labour. They were reportedly released on bail in the evening. The farmers said that the support price of Rs. 1,030 per quintal was unscientific and accused the Government of not doing any research before arriving on that figure. The leaders of the farmers said they would not earn even 70 per cent of the cost of raising the crop with the present support price, and demanded that the Government appoint a team of agricultural experts, scientists and farmers to study the cost of cultivation. “Let the team study factors such as cost of seeds, fertilizers, labour and harvest before fixing the support price,” they said.
