KOTTAYAM: The 34th Kerala State junior basketball championships will get underway at the Girideepam Bethany Schools floodlit basketball courts here on Saturday. The seven day tournament will feature 14 teams each in both the sections. The tournament will be played on a league-cum-knock out basis. The teams have been divided into four groups. In the boys sections, three teams each from Group ‘A' and ‘B' and the group winners of ‘C' and ‘D' will qualify for the quarterfinals. In the girls sections, two teams each from the four groups will qualify for the quarterfinals. Kottayam is the defending champion in both sections while Kannur is the runner-up in both sections. V.N. Vasan MLA will inaugurate the tournament. The groupings: Boys: ‘A': Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Wayanad; ‘B': Thrissur, Kannur, Thiruvananthapuram and Palakkad; ‘C': Kasaragod, Malappuram and Kollam; ‘D': Ernakulam, Kozhikode and Idukki Girls: ‘A': Kannur, Kozhikode and Alappuzha; ‘B': Kottayam, Kasaragod and Palakkad; ‘C': Thrissur, Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Malappuram; ‘D': Kollam, Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram and Wayanad .
