Asian Conference on Physical Education begins

HYDERABAD: The three-day Asian Conference on Physical Education & Computer Science in Sports, under the auspices of International Association of Computer Science in Sports, was formally inaugurated by Prof. Tirupathi Rao, Vice-Chancellor, Osmania University, here on Friday.

About 450 delegates are taking part in the conference in which 178 research papers of physical education and computer science in sports are going to be presented.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Rao stressed the significance of such a conference which he felt should enhance the levels of understanding for the faculty members tend to interact with different personalities with varied perceptions on the same subject.

“These meetings should only help the members to do a better job by virtue of the knowledge they gain going through various research papers,” Prof. Rao said.

Dr. V. Satyanarayana, an authority in physical education, said the purpose of hosting the meeting was to provide a platform for the faculty members and those related to the fields of coaching to come up with innovative ideas.

FMC billiards & snooker

The 30th Fateh Maidan Club Open billiards and snooker tournament will be held from May 9 to 23, according to Paresh Shah, tournament secretary.

Mr. Shah informed the media here on Friday there was already a good response with 112 entries in snooker and 40 in billiards. The highlight of the event is the lone woman entry, I. Lahari of South Central Railway, besides the 33 entries from outside Hyderabad.

The tournament is to be held in the knockout format with snooker being best-of-three games till the semifinal phase when the matches will be best-of-five frames and the final best-of-seven fames.

In billiards, best-of-three games will be the order till the quarterfinal, best-of-five frames in the semifinal and best-of-seven frames in the final.

The seedings: Billiards: 1. K. Venkatesham, 2. Simhachalam, 3. I.V. Rajeev, 4. Durga Prasad. Snooker: 1. I.V. Rajeev, 2. Arvind, 3. Shanker, 4. Khaizer Raoof .

Super Cats CA wins

Super Cats Cricket Academy emerged champion defeating Sports Coaching Foundation (Blues) by 10 wickets in the final of the under-12 category of the 11th Boston Cup floodlit cricket tournament at the SCF Grounds (Masab Tank).

Batting first, SCF Blues scored only 37 for four with Mustafa (three for 10) being the pick of the bowlers. In reply, Super Cats romped home without losing a wicket.

The scores: Under-12: Final: SCF Blues 37 for four (Mustafa three for 10) lost to Super Cats CA 38 for no loss .

Kho-kho selections

The Hyderabad District Kho-Kho Association will organise selection trials to pick the district teams for the inter-district championship to be held in Tallapuram ( Nizamabad) from May 11 to 13.

The selections are scheduled at Bhavan's Junior College (Sainikpuri) here on May 8 from 2 p.m. For details contact Ph: 9849086799.

Andhra team

A 15-member Andhra team will take part in the South Zone carrom championship to be held at Thriuvananthapuram from May 9 to 11, the Andhra Carrom Association general secretary Jaleel said in Vijayawada on Friday.

The team: Men: A. Raghavendra, V. Srinivasa Rao, G.H. Sriniavsa Rao, T. Bhaskar, L. Ram Babu, A. Pavan Kumar; Junior Boys: Sk. Elahi, Mohammad Hameed. Women: B. Vijaja Kumari, N. Nirmala, P. Vineela, T. Indraja, M. Bhavani; Junior Girls: M.S.K. Harika, A. Bhavani.

Managers: N. Rammohan Rao, B.V. Ramani; Umpires: Sk. Azmatullah, P. Bhaskar Rao .

Appanna shines

G. Appanna's all-round show was the highlight of Brandix's 149-run win over HSBC in the VDCA institutions league in Visakhapatnam on Friday.

The scores: Brandix 282 for four in 30 overs (G. Appanna 81, Sandeepa 57 n.o., K. Karthik 45) bt HSBC 73 in 18.3 overs (G. Appanna three for 11) .
