CHENNAI: While cases of cruelty against women in the State have generally come down in the past two years, the number of rape cases has gone up substantially. The Home Department's policy note which was tabled in the Assembly on Friday revealed that the number of rape cases reported had gone up from 523 in 2007 to 596 in 2009. While the number of cases charge sheeted was 432 in 2007, it was only 269 in 2009. As many as 301 cases are under investigation, according to the policy note. In the same period, the number of reported cases of dowry death had come down marginally from 208 to 194. Cruelty by husband and his relatives had a drastic fall from 1976 in 2007 to 1242 in 2009. Cases of molestation were also lower last year compared to the previous two years. Of the total 3,492 reported cases of cruelty against women last year, 2027 had been charge sheeted, 1021 were under investigation and 444 disposed of. Interestingly, love affairs led to more murders in the State. According to the policy note, there were 123 murders in 2007 due to love affairs and it had gone up to 217 in 2009. Family quarrel was the reason for 453 murders and wordy duel led to 372 deaths in 2009. Personal enmity was the motive for 282 murders, followed by land dispute and drunken brawl which accounted for nearly 100 murders each. Caste clashes claimed 4 lives and four persons died in police firing last year.
