TAMBARAM: The Chennai Suburban Police have recovered around 175 sovereigns of stolen jewellery following the arrest of 11 men. A release said the arrested persons, operating in different groups, had struck in Madipakkam, Selaiyur, Chitlapakkam, Maduravoyal, Porur, Poonamallee, Korattur, Ambattur and Tirumallaivoyal over the past couple of months. Among the arrested are Suriyan, Sudhakaran, Ganapathy and Sathish, who had assaulted a woman in broad daylight at her house in Kamakoti Nagar, Pallikaranai, on April 9 and took away jewellery and valuables. They had also snatched chains from women in Adambakkam and St. Thomas Mount. One of the arrested is Venkatesh (21), who robbed Rs.3.8 lakh from a person who had just withdrawn the amount from a bank in Madipakkam. A total of Rs.1.15 lakh was recovered from him. According to police, Malarmannan, also known as Mannar used to break into locked houses in Madipakkam, Adambakkam, Pallikaranai and Selaiyur. Jewellery weighing 45 sovereigns were recovered from him. The five others arrested were Prabhu, Syed Meeran, Vinod, Arul and Vinod Kumar. Chennai Suburban Police Commissioner S.R. Jangid handed over the recovered jewellery to the owners. V. Varadharaju, R. Samuthirapandi and Z. Annie Vijaya, Deputy Commissioners of St. Thomas Mount, Ambattur and Madhavaram police districts, were present.
