TIRUCHI: A new integrated Collectorate complex, sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs.12.01 crore, would be ready by the end of July and Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi would declare open the facility before August 15, Transport Minister K.N.Nehru said here on Saturday.

The 1.10-lakh square feet building is coming up on a seven-acre land adjacent to the Collector's Office.

The land — previously held by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board and the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Pudukottai — has been taken over by the district administration.

The buildings at the site were demolished and the construction work began last year.

The Collectorate block will consist of ground plus three floors with two elevators, according to Public Works Department sources. The existing Collector's office, constructed in 1995, has been found inadequate to accommodate various government departments.

Speaking to reporters after inspecting the progress of construction of the Collectorate complex along with Collector T.Soundiah, Mr.Nehru said that the Chief Minister would also commission various other development works in the district, including the new Tiruchi Taluk Office, under construction on Bharathidasan Salai in the city, the completed components of the Rs.169-crore drinking water supply augmentation scheme, the indoor stadium at the Anna Stadium and a new Samathuvapuram at Araichi in Thathaiyengarpet union.

Mr. Nehru instructed officials of the Public Works Department (Buildings) to expedite the work on the construction of the Collectorate.

Earlier, Mr. Nehru inspected the Tiruchi Regional Transport Office at Pirattiyur in the city.
