Shortage of medical gas, following economic blockade, hits hospital services in Manipur

Iboyaima Laithangbam

IMPHAL: Government and private hospitals in Manipur have announced that all operations, including emergency cases, shall be stopped from Monday onwards since there was no stock of medical gas as a result of the protracted economic blockade imposed by the All Naga Students' Association Manipur and the total blockade by the Naga Students' Federation along the two inter state highways which are lifelines of Manipur. The tribal students are protesting against the autonomous district council elections and the bar on the visit of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah) general secretary, Thuingaleng Muivah, to Manipur.

Dr. Y. Mohen, Medical Superintendent of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, said the situation was further aggravated by the scarcity of water in hospitals.

As there was no fuel now, water tankers had suspended service.
