Rubabuddin serves contempt notice on BJP leaders

Manas Dasgupta

For their criticism of CBI probe into Sohrabuddin encounter

AHMEDABAD: Rubabuddin Sheikh, brother of Sohrabuddin who was killed in a fake encounter by the Gujarat police, has served a contempt notice on some State BJP leaders.

The notice, served by Rubabuddin's advocate Rajesh Mankad, has asked the BJP leaders including State president R.C. Faldu, and national vice-president Purshottam Rupala and State general secretary Vijay Rupani to clarify within seven days their May 2 statements.

These leaders accused the CBI of being a Congress agent and termed its investigation of the Sohrabuddin case the Centre's arm-twisting of political opponents.

The May 7 notice cited the background of the Sohrabuddin case as it progressed in the Supreme Court and said “such pronouncements by the BJP leaders “constituted interference in the process of law and therefore a clear contempt of the Supreme Court,” particularly because they knew that the CBI inquiry was ordered by the court and not by any government.

Meanwhile, several vernacular newspapers have published an advertisement inserted in the name of the Jan Adhikar Samiti, Vadodara, raising questions about the justification for “showing so much concern for the terrorist Sohrabuddin.” The advertisement claimed that he was an agent of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. It asked the people to ponder whether those showing concern for Sohrabuddin wanted to demoralise the Gujarat police entirely and “create Kasabs” in the State.
