CHANDIGARH: The khap panchayats or caste councils of Haryana have got support from Navin Jindal, Congress MP from Kurukshetra, who has praised them for rendering yeoman service to society. In a letter to Khap representatives, Mr. Jindal, who is also an industrialist, acknowledged the existence of the panchayats since the time of great rulers like Ashoka and Harshvardhan, adding that they had always given a “new direction” to society. Declaring his support for them, Mr. Jindal said the Khap panchayats had been rendering yeoman service to society by resolving people's problems even before the present-day legal system came into existence. The Khap panchayats — at a Mahapanchayat meeting held at Pai in Kaithal district on May 2 — put all elected representatives in the State on a one-month notice to support their demand for amending the Hindu Marriage Act for seeking a ban on same gotra marriages. MP's regret They also threatened to gherao Mr. Jindal in Kurukshetra on Monday if he did not extend support to the demand. The MP stated in the letter that he supported the Khap panchayats' demand and regretted not attending the Mahapanchayat. “My family and I have always respected the society's traditions, customs, beliefs and culture,” Mr. Jindal said, extending full support to the Khaps within the ambit of the law of the land. He also requested them to vigorously fight evils like female foeticide and dowry, besides seeking their guidance from time to time in future. Mr. Jindal's letter has come at a time when the opposition INLD has already favoured the demand to amend the law and ban marriages within the same gotra. Various caste panchayats in Haryana launched a campaign against same gotra weddings after a Karnal court on March 30 awarded the death penalty to five persons and sentenced two others to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of a couple who married despite having a common lineage. — PTI
