GULBARGA: Union Labour and Employment Minister M. Mallikarjun Kharge has taken exception to the manner in which the State Government handled the agitation by the pourakarmikas and the way the district administration forcibly shifted the former Labour Minister S.K. Kanta to the Rajiv Gandhi Super-Speciality Hospital in Raichur district. “The handling of the agitation by the pourakarmikas only proves that the State Government is not interested in solving the problem but in creating fear psychosis and suppressing the agitation,” Mr. Kharge said. Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Kharge said that the Government should know how to handle such sensitive situations. “The way in which Mr. Kanta was forcibly shifted to the RGSH is not ethical. It should be condemned by everybody.” Mr. Kharge said that officials handling such agitations should know that in a democracy people have the right to express their opposition to the Government's policies or protest against injustice by peaceful means. Mr. Kharge alleged that the police had appeared to have acted in vengeance for the Tarfail slum incident where the police were stoned. He said after the incident, the police had arrested more than 70 people. “A vengeful attitude by the police does not augur well for a democratic set-up,” he said.
