K. G. Kakar is no more

NEW DELHI: Krishan Gopal Kakar, who represented Delhi in hockey, football and athletics, passed away on Sunday. He was 90.

A large number of officials and former players attended his funeral at the Nigambodh Ghat on Monday.

Kakar was a member of the Delhi State football team that won the National championship in 1944. That has remained Delhi's solitary National title in football.

Kakar was also a member of the Indian hockey team that toured Afghanistan in 1949. He served the Jawaharlal Nehru Hockey Tournament Society as its Joint Secretary for nearly 40 years.

He was also an outstanding sprinter of his time. In his later years Kakarsaab made his mark as an announcer at football and hockey tournaments.

Kakar was also a qualified international football referee and a hockey umpire.

The Nehru Hockey Society on Monday paid rich tributes to Kakar and praised his contribution to sports. — Special Correspondent
